―King Leonidas, 300

Overview[]

Origins[]

300 is a film directed by Zack Snyder and released by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 9, 2007. It is a film adaptation of the comic book series of the same name, produced by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley in 1998, on which it is based on the Battle of Thermopylae, a part of the Greco-Persian Wars in 480 BC. The film was highly successful upon release and received a sequel years later called 300: Rise of an Empire.

However, before of it's release, the film became notably popular by 2006 within the release of the trailer, most due to the famous "This is Sparta!" clip. The scene takes place before the battle starts, when a Persian messenger arrives at the gates of Sparta demanding the submission of Sparta to King Xerxes. In response, Leonidas kicks the messenger into the large well, immediately after shouting "This is Sparta!". Resulting into his guards battling the messengers.[1]

Both the scene and the lines became a meme on the internet, and was notably first spread on the website YTMND (short for "You’re the man now, dog!"), a online community and memetic hub site that hosts remixes and parodies of popular culture in form of webpages, mostly only a still image or animated GIFs with an overlay text and a looped audio track. The first usages of the scene was a website by user heksaur named after the line. Since then it was created varies "This is Sparta" YTMND websites in between 2006-2009, and it spread around the internet since then.

In between the websites, one of them was "300TMND: THIS IS SPARTA (fun times mix)", a website created by Keaton Monger, also known on the internet as keatonkeaton999 and Funtastic Power![2] on February 19th, 2007. The site features a gif of the original scene followed by a remix referencing the scene. The instrumental track was created by keatonkeaton999 himself, which would later be remixed within the original clip.

The track is based on the YTMND page "300TMND: THIS IS SPARTAAAA!!!" by NorthAmericanDangerDuo, in which the clip was edited for Leonidas to give a long scream before kicking the Persian messenger into a building and exploding in the process.[3]

Last techno remix" by lele fonda, both released on May 8th and December 14th of 2007 and this resulted into others YouTubers following the same pairing.

As a styled YTPMV remix, the first spin-off remix based on the track was "DENTAL PLAN (fun times mix)", a website also created by keatonkeaton999 on May 9, 2007 as a YTMND website. And it's based on the "Dental Plan, Lisa Needs Braces!" scene from The Simpsons episode, "Last Exit to Springfield". On YouTube, this style of remixes would became popular after the YouTubers SupDawg444, Tachin1994, and RAVAGE656 release their first Sparta Remixes by 2008,[4][5][6] resulting into a genre of "Sparta Remixes", with people who does the remixes being called as the "Sparta Remixers".

And by 2008, over hundreds of YouTube videos of the Sparta Remix was released. Since then, a community was form to make YTPMV-style remixes based on the original track, mainly even recreating the track's instrumentals.
