A Cruel Angel's Thesis

"The Cruel Angel's Thesis" (残酷な天使のテーゼ, Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze), also known as "A Cruel Angel's Thesis", is a song composed by Yoko Takahashi for the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series. It is also a minor meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.

Summary[]

"A Cruel Angel's Thesis" was released on October 25, 1995, along with other songs from the anime's original soundtrack. Later after its release, it became one of the most popular anisongs (songs specifically created for anime series) along with Neon Genesis Evangelion itself, being critically acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. The number of CD and digital sales for the song had reached over 1 million in January 2014.

The opening sequence of said anime became a meme over the course of 2000s, spawning parodies, remixes and tribues across sites such as YouTube and Nico Nico Douga. Most of them would feature a certain character/theme replacing the intro's motive. This kind of remakes was dubbed as "X-gelion" or "A Cruel X's Thesis", with X being something or someone starring the parody. A few live-action versions have also been made, some by fans and some by TV stations or studios. In the past, some fanmade parodies were removed from video sharing sites due to copyright claims by Studio Khara and King Records.

The first rip to feature "A Cruel Angel's Thesis", "Dedede Fusion Collab", was uploaded on April 13, 2016. The song would usually be used in mashup rips, however opening parodies are also present on the channel. An example of said remake is the rip "A Cruel Angel's Thesis - Neon Genesis Evangelion", where the opening becomes themed after HH and features sentence mixed vocals. The song itself is mainly ripped through the games Neon Genesis Evangelion and Neon Genesis Evangelion 64, the latter being a joke game used to rip songs specifically from the anime.
