Donkey Kong 64 is a collect-a-thon platformer in the Donkey Kong series developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The composer for this game is Grant Kirkhope.

Overview[]

Donkey Kong 64 is a three-dimensional platforming adventure game starring Donkey Kong and his friends, dubbed the "DK Crew", trying to stop series main villain King K. Rool from destroying Donkey Kong's island with his Blast-O-Matic.

The gameplay is similar to Super Mario 64, except it features five different playable characters, each one with their own powers and abilities, which they must use to collect Golden Bananas and fight bosses. In addition to different skills, each character gets a ranged weapon with a rather odd choice of ammo. For example, Donkey Kong gets the Coconut Gun, which can launch coconuts at enemies from a distance, as well as activate special labeled switches. However, the game has been criticized for being tedious with the large amount of collectables, some going so far as to blame it for the fall of the collect-a-thon genre entirely. It was also the last mainline Donkey Kong game until 2010's Donkey Kong Country Returns.

The music for this game, composed by Grant Kirkhope, has been criticized for sounding similar to his previous works like Banjo-Kazooie (a game which Kirkhope also composed) rather than being a continuation of the much-praised ambient-yet-melodic musical style of the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. Though, other than this, the music is highly acclaimed. One of the most iconic tracks is the divisive "DK Rap" track, which has been both ridiculed and beloved for the musical style, and the lyrics introducing each of the main characters and their abilities.

Trivia[]

  • The actual OST on GilvaSunner used a different thumbnail with the official logo on a black background. The thumbnail SiIvaGunner uses for its rips (with the white background and larger fanmade recreation of the logo) was most likely taken from another VGM channel, BrawlBRSTMs3 X. The reason this has never been fixed unlike other games is unknown, but it might be due to the popularity and iconic status of the "DK Rap" rips which includes their choice of thumbnail.
