Super Mario World is a video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo in 1990. The game's composer is Koji Kondo. The game was also included in later versions of Super Mario All-Stars with minor improvements, and received an enhanced port to the Game Boy Advance as Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World.

Overview[]

Super Mario World is a platformer and the sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3. As a launch title for the SNES/Super Famicom, it uses the console's 16-bits to improve almost anything from its predecessor from graphics to gameplay while remaining in familiar grounds by using most mechanics introduced in the previous game like the world map and the flight power-up. One of its main new feature is the introduction of Yoshi, who will prove popular and eventually star in its own spin-off franchise starting as early as the game's sequel: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The plot is simple as usual: while visiting Dinosaur Island, Princess Peach is once again captured by Bowser and the Koopalings who have taken control of the island and trapped the locals, the Yoshis, inside their own eggs. It is up to Mario and Luigi to save her while rescuing the Yoshi clan.

The game's music is rather unique in the series as most of its themes actually are variations of the same leitmotif. It also adds a layer a percussion each time the player is riding a Yoshi, a musical gimmick that will become a staple of the character's themes. The iconic soundtrack is often reused and rearranged in later Mario titles, as well as the Super Smash Bros. series.
