Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is a video game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo on Wii U in 2014. The game's composers are Keiki Kobayashi, Junichi Nakatsuru, Hiroki Hashimoto, Hiroyuki Kawada, Eriko Sakurai, Akihiko Ishikawa and Yoshinori Hirai.

On March 9, 2025, all Super Smash Bros. for Wii U rips were updated to use thumbnails based on those of Super Smash Bros. 3DS, for consistency with GilvaSunner's upload of "Butter Building - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" during April Fools' Day 2017.

For character-specific thumbnails, Kirby uses the original thumbnail directly from GilvaSunner, while the rest use a recreation with the screenshots having slightly different crops (most noticeable with the Luigi, Ness, Wario, and Lucina screenshots) and visual fixes (most noticeable with Mii Fighter with Chocobo Hat and Pikachu screenshot).

Beforehand, the thumbnails just had the logo on a white background. The original thumbnail images contained minor inconsistencies between rips.

Currently, there are 39 fighters in the game's roster who have yet to receive thumbnails, those being Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Wario, Donkey Kong, Mr. Game & Watch, Little Mac, Zelda, Sheik, Ganondorf, Toon Link, Zero Suit Samus, Pit, Palutena, Marth, Ike, Robin, Duck Hunt, King Dedede, Meta Knight, Falco, Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Villager, Olimar, Shulk, Dark Pit, Lucina, Mega Man, Sonic, Mewtwo, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta.
