"Harlem Shake" is a song by American DJ and producer Baauer. It is also a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.

History[]

Song[]

On May 22, 2012, Baauer had his song, "Harlem Shake", released by the record label Jeffree's of Mad Decent. The song consists of a mechanical bassline, Dutch house synth riffs, a dance music beat drop, and sound effects of lions, beasts, grotesque creatures, or monsters growling. The song's vocals are sampled from "Los Terroristas" by Hector El Father and "Miller Time" by Plastic Little.

The song references a popular hip-hop dance in Harlem known as the Harlem shake, which consists of making jerky movements with the arms and shoulders.

Internet meme[]

In 2013, "Harlem Shake" skyrocketed into mainstream attention due to an Internet meme featuring it, started by the opening segment of the Filthy Frank video "FILTHY COMPILATION #6 - SMELL MY FINGERS" and later popularized by "The Harlem Shake v1 (TSCS original)" by TheSunnyCoastSkate. It mostly consists of a person dancing to the song in a zany constume, when later, as the beat drops, a multitude of people dance to the song, also in zany outfits.

"Harlem Shake" was first featured in the rip "Pursuit ~ Cornered - Variation (Trilogy Release) - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" as a subtle melody change. After that, it was included as a source for Ajit Pai in the King for a Day Tournament as a reference the video "PSA from Chairman of the FCC Ajit Pai", and was the basis for the promotional rip "The Harlem Shakeover - SiIvaGunner: King for a Day Tournament". Starting in April 2019, it started appearing more often in rips. During the King for Another Day Tournament, it returned as part of Metal Ajit Pai's source list and was utilized in 7 rips during the event.

On May 22, 2022, the tenth anniversary of the song's release, The Harlem Shakeover began, a channel event in which Ajit Pai took over SiIvaGunner and exclusively uploaded "Harlem Shake"-related rips. This event saw the release of over 300 rips featuring the song, as well as an album dedicated to it.
