"16 contenders... but only one can be king."
―The channel description

The King for a Day Tournament was a channel event hosted on SiIvaGunner channel in 2018. The event involves 16 characters, nominated by the SiIvaGunner community, battling it out in an elimination bracket. The winner of the tournament, determined by the fanbase's votes, would receive their own special day to take over the SiIvaGunner channel.

The music released for the tournament was compiled in the album STRINGS OF FATE ~ SiIvaGunner: King for a Day Tournament Original Soundtrack.

Because of the event's popularity and positive reception, the SiIvaGunner team later produced the King for Another Day Tournament, the second and final tournament in the King for a Day series.

Background

This event follows through with its announcement during the King for a Day Tournament Break: In a parody of the Super Smash Bros. series and the battle royale genre, 16 contestants fought in 1-on-1 elimination matches (with each winner decided by a poll) until there was only one winner.

Theme

During this event, the channel's banner showed the lighthouse wearing the crown seen in the event's logo, with the background being the same fire aesthetic seen in the event's logo.

The channel description was also changed to give a description of the event:

16 contenders... but only one can be king.

SiIvaGunner: King for a Day is an all-out battle royale tournament, where sixteen fighters, chosen by the fans, will enter the fray. The winner--decided with YOUR vote--will get to run the SiIvaGunner channel for a day, complete with their own rips!

Rips uploaded

Throughout the tournament and after the tourney proper ended, the SiIvaGunner team released rips representing each of the 16 characters (even characters who were knocked out of the bracket), and for the tournament itself. These are unique among SiIvaGunner rips as mostly being entirely original arrangements or even original compositions, credited directly to the artists that made them, all placed under the fake game SiIvaGunner: King for a Day Tournament.

The tournament matches and the winners of said matches were announced through several short videos that were uploaded in schedule. After 11 days and 15 matches, Unregistered HyperCam 2 was declared final winner of the tournament on August 9.

However, tournament arrangements continued to be uploaded after HyperCam's victory until September 9, when the event was suspended and normal rips resumed, with a few tournament arrangements being uploaded amidst the normal rips. The proper tournament ending happened between October 7 and 8, and the Unregistered HyperCam 2 Takeover occurred on the next day, October 9.

Trivia

  • Hinchy is the main announcer for the tournament videos, with Agent providing the "Get ready for the next battle!" clip and some parts of the voiceover during the final round.[3][4]
  • Hideki Naganuma retweeted the reveal tweet for DJ Professor K, the character themed around his music, on his official Twitter page.[5]
  • The Etika character was a bait-and-switch for Monika from Doki Doki Literature Club!, whose silhouette appears instead of Etika's. The DDLC character had previously been teased since the beginning of Season 3 up until the end of the Nostalgia Critic Takeover, where it was revealed it was a bait-and-switch.
    • The artist of the outline explained that there was never a full illustration for the outline, however they have made a reverse bait-and-switch of Etika's outline with a Monika sketch.[6]
  • Chaze the Chat explained how the team selected the fighters in a Tweet:[7]
    • The contestants for the King for a Day Tournament were chosen like this:
      • 4 were chosen due to popularity from the email submissions.
      • 4 were chosen due to the potential of the character from at least one email.
      • 4 were ideas from rippers.
      • 4 were ideas from backroom.
    • He also noted that "rippers chose Wario, and the fans chose Waluigi, so they were combined into a single character on the rippers' side." [8]
  • The package of bonus art (available from https://highquality.rip/kfadost) contains an early version of the VS screen with GRAND DAD and a strange fusion between Mr. Krabs and Garnet.
  • In every matchup video (aside from the finals), there is text that quickly moves across the screen for short periods of time.
    • 0:00 - 0:03 "Led here through the strings of fate, life or death beyond the gate."
      • This text is also seen in the background of every promotional rip thumbnail as well as in the description of every winner announcement video (except finals).
    • 0:04 - 0:05 "A dueling clash of fate has begun! Initiate the assault and cast away the shroud of indetermination. The time to fight is now!"
    • 0:03 - 0:04 & 0:05 - 0:07 "As the silver light flickers and revolves around the eternal cradle of the earth, the true battle for ultimate supremacy has begun. Who will survive and make it out as the champion?"

Characters

  • Ajit Pai's character is based on Ajit Pai, the (then) current chairman for the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), who is infamous for his controversial stance against (and eventual elimination of) protections on net neutrality. Many supporters of net neutrality argue that internet service providers can use the lack of protections to throttle internet connections, hence the "slow internet" rips. Pai has become an internet meme as a result of his reputation for being a sellout to said internet service providers, and for his video "PSA from Chairman of the FCC Ajit Pai", a response to the "trolls" in support of net neutrality.
    • In this video, he gives a list of "7 Things You Can Still Do on the Internet After Net Neutrality" while twirling a fidget spinner and holding a NERF gun. He also does the "Harlem Shake" in this video.
    • Pai is known for having a giant Reese's Peanut Butter Cup brand mug that he drinks out of.
  • Geno's appearance in the brawl may be a nod to fan support of the character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate prior to its release.
  • The line used to introduce "Weird Al" ("He doesn't care if you're full...") is a reference to his parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" called "Eat It".
  • The Unregistered HyperCam 2 character is a reference to the banner displayed on any recording by the free version of the HyperCam 2 screen capture software. It was used extensively during 2005-2009 YouTube in low-quality tutorials. The character's design is modeled after HyperCam's old "camcorder on disc" logo, with the saw blade representing the disc.
    • Concept art for a character named Hyperchan, a gijinka version of Unregistered HyperCam 2, exists. Based on the amount, she was likely planned to represent Unregistered HyperCam 2 prior to being cut.
  • Pitbull's character references a minor meme involving his self-proclaimed title of "Mr. Worldwide", a phrase he says in almost all of his songs.
  • Reggie Fils-Aimé's character description references Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros. - Mii Character Announce Trailer", in which Fils-Aimé and Satoru Iwata have an anime-style fight sequence. The line "his body is ready" is a reference to a quote of his while demonstrating the Wii Fit at the E3 press conference held on July 11, 2007: "My... my body is ready."
    • The mention of Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a reference to an advertisement of the game called "Reggie's Animal Crossing: New Leaf Home Tour"
    • The mention of Fortnite is a reference to Fortnite's port to Nintendo Switch, which Reggie announced in a Nintendo Direct stream.
  • Will Smith's character description almost exclusively references his character from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
    • One of the rip types mentions references to "Fesh Pince", a YTP of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
  • ZUN's description references his love of alcohol, and his frequent instrumental use of Romantic Tp. in his musics (most known in Touhou Project).
    • In his artwork, besides the noticeable trumpet, he's also holding a gourd possibly taken from Suika Ibuki, a character from Touhou Project.
  • The Dancing Alien Team is composed of three memes:
    • The green alien on the lower right is "Marcianito 100% Real No Fake", a .gif commonly associated with the song "Nunca me faltes"
    • The green alien on the lower left is "Dame Tu Cosita", an animation made by ArtNoux to accompany the song "Introduccion B (El Cosita Remix)", which eventually became "Dame Tu Cosita".
    • The metallic one on the top is Howard the Alien / Money Longer Alien, who is associated with the Lil Uzi Vert song "Money Longer."
  • Thanos's character description references his limited-time appearance in Fortnite, where players could emote as Thanos and perform whimsical out-of-character dance moves. This has spawned the video "Thanos dance", which shows Thanos dancing to "Fireflies" by Owl City.
  • Solid Snake's rather endowed backside is a reference to fans realizing that Solid Snake's bottom had been shrunk in between Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
    • The line used to introduce him ("He kept you waiting...") is a reference to a recurring quote of Snake's, "Kept you waiting, huh?"
