Maki is Knuckles is a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel. It refers to various rips that reference both Maki Nishikino from Love Live! and Knuckles the Echidna from the Sonic series together.
Background[]
Although it is not certain, this meme was most likely started by Triple-Q, who created the first SiIvaGunner rip that referenced the meme, "Aishiteru Banzai! (MAKI Mix) - Love Live! School idol festival" (uploaded April 18, 2016). On the day the rip was uploaded, he made a Tumblr post stating Maki is "essentially the human female version of Knuckles the Echidna", along with art of Maki dressed like the Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric iteration of Knuckles.[1] The phrase was reiterated in the rip's Volume 3 & Knigra release.
Triple-Q would later upload the rip to his personal channel on September 14, 2016 with the aforementioned artwork added to the visuals, under the name "Knuckles the Echidna is Maki Nishikino's fursona and here's DEFINITIVE PROOF" (NSFW). The description of this upload spells out the similarities that the rip's visuals and later references by Triple-Q are based on. Elaborated for clarity, they are:
- Both have red hair with purple eyes, with red being their main associated color.
- Both have similar personalities, including being stubborn, tsundere, and gullible.
- In the Sonic Boom continuity, Knuckles can play the piano, which is Maki's main instrument.
Triple-Q would continue to post art referencing the meme occasionally.[2][3][4]
Rips[]
The meme's debut rip, "Aishiteru Banzai! (MAKI Mix) - Love Live! School idol festival", is a mashup between "Unknown from M.E." (associated with Knuckles) and "Aishiteru Banzai!" (associated with Maki), as well as sampling the Knuckles lines "Give it your best shot!" and "Oh no" from his boss fight in Sonic Adventure. The meme would continue to make occasional appearances in rips after its debut, with a notable amount of them being Sonic or Love Live! rips. It usually manifests by combining songs related to both characters together in the same rip; the most-recurring songs used for the meme are the ones that appeared in its debut rip, since those are the songs most strongly associated with them.
Most iterations of the Maki Nishikino's Birthday event reference the meme in some capacity, with the 2018 and 2021 events having a larger focus on it.
