The Nostalgia Critic Takeover was an event during which the SiIvaGunner channel was used by the Nostalgia Critic after he defeated Inspector Gadget during his takeover. However rather than uploading anything relating to himself, this takeover encapsulated a stylistic throwback to the pre-reboot Season 1 era of the channel, in an attempt to evoke nostalgia.

Summary[]

The banner was changed to show the Nostalgia Critic blasting through the lighthouse. The YouTube and Twitter profile picture showed Nostalgia Critic in a recreation of the third act of Doki Doki Literature Club!. The channel description was changed to:

The ONLY Official Youtube channel for the Nostalgia Critic and SilvaGunner.

New Nostalgia Critic rips every two hours.

New Flintstones Flashbacks every two hours.

New Snow Halation Memorization every two hours.

New Nigra's Never Seen episodes every two hours.

New Blue Balls every two hours.

Classic throwback rips are uploaded after they are cleared (and are willingly submitted by a team of content creators). Sometimes they are uploaded on an inconsistent schedule, so check the playlists. Same with Soulja Boy, Chip the Ripper, and mashups.

The description catchphrase was changed to "Read the channel description so I don't have to," as a reference to the Nostalgia Critic's catchphrase, "Hello I'm the Nostalgia Critic, I remember it so you don't have to."

Most of the rips uploaded during this time were released in the album Inspector Gunner 2 With Critic, which was announced in "An AWESOME Announcement!"

After the last video, the channel "rebooted" (referencing SilvaGunner: Rebooted) and reverted to the SiIvaGunner avatar, which means the channel returned to its original state[1]. The channel description has a typo ("mmostly") in it.

Background[]

The inclusion of Doug Walker as channel host comes a few days after several content creators for Channel Awesome (which owns Nostalgia Critic) came forward with their stories of abuse and apathy from the owners of Channel Awesome. Notably, many of the accounts detail how Channel Awesome focused almost exclusively on promoting the Nostalgia Critic, often at the detriment of the other contributors. This is perhaps the reason for the Doki Doki Literature Club!-esque profile picture, which comes from a scene in which a character has disposed of everyone else in order to be the only person at the center of the player's attention.

Types of rips uploaded[]

Rips from this takeover included, but were not limited to, the following types:

Near the end of the takeover, some medley rips were uploaded.

Additionally, the upload speed was raised back up to bi-hourly (sometimes hourly) for the duration of the takeover.

Trivia[]

  • The inclusion of a cinnamon bun in the profile picture is perhaps a reference to a purported incident in which Doug Walker unwittingly ate a Cinnabon frosted using a sex toy.
  • The banner includes a portion of the Nostalgia Critic's introduction since 2016.
  • Chaze the Chat has stated that he had the idea for Nostalgia Critic becoming a channel host since around February 23[8], when he created the "Doug Walker fan server"[9]. Coincidentally, the "Not So Awesome" document appeared on April 2.
