On July 25, 2010, Japanese music producer daniwellP uploaded the song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" to the Japanese video website Niconico. The song consists of the Vocaloid singer Hatsune Miku repeating the Japanese onomatopoeia "nyan" (referring to a cat's call) along with a high-tempo upbeat melody. On January 30, 2011, Niconico user もももも (Momomomo) would then upload a cover of the song featuring the UTAU voice Momone Momo instead of Hatsune Miku.
On April 5, 2011, YouTube user saraj00n uploaded a video titled "Nyan Cat", which consists of the Momomomo version of "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" playing along with a pixelated GIF animation created by illustrator Christopher Torres of a cat with a Pop-Tart for a body flying through space with a rainbow trail behind it.[1] The video has since become an incredibly popular internet meme, receiving over 204 million views as of March 16, 2023. The Momomomo cover would then be known as "Nyan Cat" in subsequent album releases.
Prior to its first rip, "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" was featured as a joke in a few rips by SiIvaGunner, the first being "Ball Rolling 1 - Super Mario Galaxy" on February 26, 2016. The first rip of the track would then be uploaded as the now-deleted "Main Theme - Nyan Cat!" as part of a channel event celebrating Hatsune Miku's birthday on August 31, 2017. The rip additionally featured unique visuals based on saraj00n's "Nyan Cat" video.
Several rips of "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" have been uploaded since then, all featuring unique visuals akin to the first one, and many other rips have used the song as a joke. Most rips of it are uploaded as rips of "Main Theme" from the defunct mobile game Nyan Cat!, which actually uses a different arrangement of the track. The song would also receive an original arrangement during the King for Another Day Tournament, representing the contestants Nico Nico and the Jazz Cats.
