Park Jae-sang was born on December 31, 1977, in Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea. In the 1990s, he attended Boston University and then Berklee College of Music, but dropped out of both and pursued a career in music. He was first credited on a song in 1999 and released his first album, Psy from the Psycho World!, in 2001. The album was controversial and PSY was fined by the government of South Korea due to its "inappropriate content". His later works in the 2000s continued to garner controversy, establishing his countercultural and controversial public perception in South Korea.
In 2012, PSY was suddenly discovered by a global audience following the viral success of "Gangnam Style", which remains his most successful and well-known work. On December 21, 2012, the music video of "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube video to attain a billion views. In 2013, he released "Gentleman", which became his second-most successful song, and in 2014, he collaborated with Snoop Dogg on the track "Hangover". In the following years, he continued to release music, including the songs "Daddy" and "New Face", although these were not quite as popular internationally as "Gangnam Style" or "Gentleman".
In 2018, PSY left his record label, YG Entertainment, and founded his own label, P Nation, in 2019. In 2022, after a five-year hiatus, PSY returned to releasing music, including the song "That That" featuring BTS member Suga.
Rips[]
On January 9, 2016, PSY appeared in the very first rip on the GiIvaSunner channel, "Battle! (Wild Pokémon) - Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire", which samples an "op" syllable from "Gangnam Style". "Gangnam Style" has since been used in many more rips and is now one of the most frequently used channel memes, behind only "Space Jam", "The Nutshack", "Snow halation" and "Meet the Flintstones". His songs "Gentleman", "Daddy", "New Face", and "That That" are also now considered channel memes.
PSY's other songs, such as "Napal Baji", "I Luv It" and "Celeb", have also been used frequently on the channel, and there are about 103 rips which feature those songs. His songs have also been ripped on the channel due to their use in music video games, including Just Dance 2014 and Neon FM.
Channel events[]
Since 2016, there has been a channel event every year dedicated to PSY's works. This typically occurs on July 15, the anniversary of the release of "Gangnam Style" and its music video.
