"Plastic Love" is a city pop song written and performed by Japanese singer Mariya Takeuchi, and produced by her husband Tatsuro Yamashita. It was originally released in Takeuchi's 1984 album Variety, then later released as a single alongside two remixes on March 25, 1985. According to Takeuchi, the song's lyrics "tell the story of a woman who lost the man she truly loves ... and that no matter how many other guys would pursue her, she couldn't shake the feelings of loneliness that the loss created."[1]
Although the song experienced moderate success in Japan upon its single release, it would later see an international resurgence in popularity in 2017 due to a YouTube upload of a fan-made eight-minute remix of the song uploaded by user "Plastic Lover". The video was greatly promoted by YouTube's recommendations algorithm, garnering over 63 million views as of May 2021 before the Plastic Lover account was terminated. With this rise in popularity, "Plastic Love" has since been widely acclaimed as a classic of the city pop and future funk genres, inspiring several remixes and cover versions. The song was re-released by Tower Records as a single on November 3, 2021, alongside a reissue of Variety.

"Plastic Love" first appeared in the Volume A-exclusive track "The Whims of Plastic Love". It then made its proper channel debut in the rip "Hip Shop - Deltarune" on November 25, 2018, in which the song appears as a brief vocal sample. The song was then greatly featured in several uploads during 2019's King for Another Day Tournament, in which Mariya Takeuchi appeared as a contestant representing her and Tatsuro Yamashita's discographies, as well as the city pop and future funk genres as a whole. She was ultimately ranked in second place, for which she was awarded the fusion collab "11 Minutes of City Pop [Full Collab, VHS Rip]" in 2020.
As a result of Takeuchi's popularity within the tournament, numerous other rips featuring "Plastic Love" have since been released on the channel. Most rips featuring the song are short melody-swaps with the nine-note piano flourish that plays at the beginning, though there are also rips that are mashups or arrangements of the full song.
