Pokemon Grand Dad Version is a short ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed Version, released on July 7, 2016 as part of the Reboot ARGs. It is a playable Pokémon battle between Chad Warden and The Voice Inside Your Head.

Summary[]

After clicking a hidden annotation on the video "A Grand New Era ~Ending~ - SilvaGunner: Rebooted" (no longer accessible due to the removal of annotations), viewers were redirected to a MEGA download page for "Final Showdown.zip", which includes the hack's ROM file, a save file, and a copy of the Game Boy Advance emulator Visual Studio Advance.

The intro sequence from Pokémon FireRed is unedited, but the title screen afterwards is modified (poorly) to display Grand Dad (with the wrong colors). Before leaving the title screen to load a file, the "GRAND DAD?!" sample plays. The included save file has a male trainer named "CHAD" (Chad Warden) with four hours of playtime and an ID number of 07777. The save starts in the final Elite Four room with 10 Full Restores, 3 Revives, and 5 Full Heals. The player's overworld sprite is edited to have dark skin like Chad Warden. The entrance door is removed from the room, and Lance is replaced with a silhouette of a trainer (The Voice Inside Your Head). When interacted with, The Voice says:

So you've made it this far... I'm impressed.
You really don't want Snow halation to die, huh.
You have to understand that this action was taken for the good of the community.
The bickering people in the comments sections, the dislike bars...
The people complaining about GRAND DAD, the people complaining about SIMPSONS.
I guess some things never change, no matter what universe you end up in, huh?
That's fine, my dear Chad.
I'll make sure we remain in this universe as much as I can.
Your adventuring days are coming to an end.
(Howie scream)

Afterwards, he will battle you. The battle music's melody has been mostly changed to "Meet the Flintstones", and at one point has morse code added that spells G-R-A-N-D-D-A-D. If defeated, the door behind The Voice will be opened and he'll say:

...
...
That's it. The reboot has ceased. I will disappear soon. But you should know...
That was all an elaborate lie. Do you think I actually care about YouTube commenters?
No, the true origin of the reboot...
Let's just say that I'm not entirely responsible for it. A vitriolic... thing. It wreaks its revenge upon the world.
Or so I think. Truthfully, I don't know what drives it. But it is determined. Vile and incomprehensible beyond words.
It channels an ancient evil within it. Can be held accountable for all that is wrong with... everything, really.
I only foresee a very bleak outcome for you. You have absolutely no chance of defeating it.
Leave this room.
When you feel ready, speak with the harbringer.
Chad...

In the next room, the exit door has been removed, and instead there's a computer in the center of the room. When interacted with, it says:

It's
  The.  T9kTdvJDUow

There is nothing left to do in the hack after seeing this text; the string at the end of this message is the YouTube video ID for "ALMOST. THERE.", the next step of the ARG.

Unused changes[]

The following changes pertain to things not used in the battle (such as the Pokédex).

  • Pokédex entry for Regirock/Grand Dad:

    GRAND DAD???

  • Pokédex entry for Vileplume/snop:

  • Pokédex entry for Lugia/Haruka:

    Pokemon Grand Dad Version Pokedex

    How it looks in-game.

  • Bulbasaur is renamed to "SIMPLEFLIP".
  • The move "Mega Punch" is renamed to "u", with a description of "u".
  • The move "Feather Dance" is renamed to "SUPERMAN".
  • The move "Poison Fang" has a description of "AA".
  • Some music and sprites outside the intended area are broken/glitched, most likely done by accident or as a side-effect of changes made for the battle.

Trivia[]

  • This is technically The Voice Inside Your Head's on-screen debut, though the only thing consistent with his canon design from "Prologue" onward is the silhouette-esque appearance.
  • It is still unknown who or what the 'true origin of the reboot' that The Voice speaks of in his closing speech refers to, as no threats greater than The Voice have appeared in the SiIvaGunner lore so far. It may have been related to the scrapped Nuts Hack story arc.
  • This is a rare occasion where Angry Joe isn't used as a villainous character. (Ironically, he would later join The Voice for the CCC.)
  • This hack is referenced in "SiIva Direct 6.4.2024" (in the trailer for ROM Hack & Mod Day).
