John Paul Larkin (March 13, 1942 – December 3, 1999), better known as Scatman John, was an American artist. He is also a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
Background[]
Scatman John was an American Eurodance artist, best known for his catchy songs, and influence on jazz rap, pop, electro swing, and dance. His stage persona is named after scat singing, a style of singing based on improvisation and nonsense syllables; Scatman popularized the use of the technique outside of jazz. While mostly regarded as a one-hit wonder in the United States, he was more popular in Europe and Japan, becoming an icon of the 1990s and remembered as one of the greatest artists of all time.
Scatman's songs have been memes throughout various eras of the internet, with early meme appreciation of the artist coming from the YouTube Poop community in 2007, mainly with "Scatman's World" and "The Invisible Man" appearing frequently in several of these edits. Around the same time, other songs of his, most notably "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)", were featured in several Super Mario 64 "bloopers" videos, making him an icon associated with the early internet and early YouTube era.
"Scatman's World" saw a resurgence in memes during 2018, particularly due to its appearance in the "Awesome! He finally..." trend.
Rips[]
Scatman John's songs have been used in several rips throughout the channel's history, most notably his two most popular songs: "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" and "Scatman's World".
Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)[]
"Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" was released in November 1994 as Scatman John's debut single. On the SiIvaGunner channel, the song was frequently featured throughout the early days of the channel alongside other popular sources, usually in the form of mashups and melody changes. After the end of Season 1, the song became less frequent on the channel and was eventually overshadowed by "Scatman's World", though it still appears occasionally. Several rip featuring the song are related to Super Mario 64, due to its association with Super Mario 64 "blooper" videos.

"Scatman's World" was released in June 1995 as Scatman John's second single. The song is also Scatman John's most used song on the channel. Initially, the song was not used as much, with "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" being the primary Scatman song used on the channel. However, the song would see an increase in usage during Season 4, particularly due to its role in the Not Funny Didn't Laugh Day event, and this increase would stick in the following seasons. The song is also notable for being a major meme on the VvvvvaVvvvvvr channel.
Other appearances[]
In addition to his two most popular songs, other Scatman John songs have been featured sporadically throughout the channel's history, usually in medleys featuring other songs by the artist. Scatman John has also appeared in a few rips as a character, most of the time representing both "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" and "Scatman's World".
