The Touhou Project (or simply Touhou) is a series of Japanese shoot-'em-up bullet hell games created by sole Team Shanghai Alice member ZUN. It is a meme on the SiIvaGunner channel.
History[]
Touhou Project marked its debut at Comiket 52, a fan convention on August 15, 1997 with the releases of Highly Responsive to Prayers and Story of Eastern Wonderland for PC-98. The series would continue releasing games for every following Comiket until Mystic Square, the final entry for the series' PC-98 era.
In 2002, after four years of hiatus, ZUN revived the series with the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the first installment for Windows PC (the sixth entry overall) under his own doujin circle, Team Shanghai Alice. Outside of the main installments, in collaboration with another doujin circle Twilight Frontier, the series has received many spin-off fighting games, usually numbered with a decimal. As of writing, it has over 30 games and various media ranging across books, manga, and music albums.
Following the release of the series' sixth game, Touhou Project has garnered a massive fanbase. This led to many fan works and doujins, with some of them being videos shared through the website Nico Nico.

On SiIvaGunner, Touhou Project and its vast amount of derivative fan works have been featured in over five hundred rips (including rips of the Touhou discography)[1] ever since the early days of the channel.
Characters from the series occasionally appear on the channel, with Reimu Hakurei and Cirno being the most common among the large cast. The creator, ZUN, also appeared as a character in the King for a Day Tournament and its sequel, bringing arrangements featuring music related to the series, bullet hell games, and alcohol.
In 2016, Lenox (who was not yet a team member at the time) began a trend of asking "Touhou album when?" in the comments of almost every rip related to Touhou, since SiIvaGunner had yet to publish an album dedicated to Touhou.[2] The album SiIvaGunner Presents: Somewhat Responsive to Requests ~ Touhou Album Now! was eventually released in December 2020, after having been in development since 2017.[3]
