"Tunak Tunak Tun" is a 1998 pop song by the Indian artist Daler Mehndi. The song is popular for its music video, which consists of Daler Mehndi dancing in front of different 3D rendered backgrounds greenscreened behind him. Much like "Gangnam Style", "Tunak Tunak Tun" became an international hit.
Overview[]
"Tunak Tunak Tun" is a Bhangra-pop single released on February 28th, 1998 by Daler Mehndi. The title and hook are an onomatopoeia for the sound of the Punjab instrument, the tumbi. The track released with a music video featuring four clones of Daler Mendhi representing the four classical elements, green-screened against animated CG backgrounds and effects. The direction of the music video was made as a response to criticism that Mehndhi's popularity was solely due to the female dancers in his videos.
It became a huge hit in India, reaching number 1 on the India Hit Singles chart. "Tunak Tunak Tun" later gained international popularity in the 2000's due to its unique and humorous music video, with users on YouTube imitating the dance. The song was also used in Soundclown mashup culture, and received some mainstream usage around 2017-18 in the form of image and video caption memes, largely referencing the Daler Menhdi clones.
